Why Does Polish Chip?

The number one client complaint with natural nail manicures is that their polish chips. There are many possible reasons for this problem and they can be very different from client to client. The nail plate must be balanced neither too oily nor too dry in order for the manicure to wear on a natural nail. Anything that interrupts that balance will cause the polish to chip. The natural nail is much trickier than artificial enhancements since every nail plate is different and it is up to the nail tech to discover what the problem is and how to correct it.

The first thing to understand is that polish chips from the base, it can either separate from the nail plate or the nail plate itself can flake apart taking the polish with it. Anything that contributes to either of these actions can be a cause for polish chipping problems.

Growing Strong, Healthy Nails:
by Melissa Licensed Nail Technician

The best way to grow strong nails is to make sure that they are kept moisturized. Because nails take a lot of abuse in our day to day activities and are repeatedly exposed to harsh detergents and chemicals that can dry them out, it's important to keep them moisturized. Most nail polish removers are alcohol based, so especially after removing nail polish put a coat of Nail Tech II Hydration on them or lotion that contains petrolium or mineral oil to protect against evaporation.
